For this month's installment of our Music To Train To playlist series, we collaborated with singer, song-writer and multi-instrumentalist Ian Williams. Founder of experimental rock band, Battles, Ian has put together an eclectic mix that is sure to broaden your horizons and inspire further discovery.
"I like mixes that jump around style wise to keep it fresh" says Ian. "You can hear the unique quality of each type of song when up against other ones. It keeps me engaged with the music and helps it not become wallpaper that sits in the background. The flow and energy comes from the jumps of world to world. This helps with exercise, because I want to keep listening to the music and feel bummed out when I have to turn it off at the end of my workout."
When it comes to exercising while on tour, Ian shared this insight: "For me exercise wipes the slate clean. I love running when I'm on tour. Even if hotel lobby call is at 8am to move on to the next city, I try to get up in time to go for a run. I often play a game of "get lost" with myself in strange towns where I don't know the streets. I flirt with going too far into unknown areas to make getting back to the hotel feel like an accomplishment. And there's something perversely sacred when you run past the same club or bar you were in the night before except the morning clean up crew is taking out the trash bags full of your empty beer bottles and it's cold and rainy outside and you feel tired and hungover. You must make that sacrifice as your penance. And through that you become clean again and can press onwards to the next city and the next show."
